tiny hints on leopard

Okay, this is what I’ve found so far from my two months experience with Leopard 10.5.2

1. Scroll zoom
   Ever look at a picture in the web so tiny that makes your eyes glued to the monitor? Or the paragraph lines so small and then you decide to change the font size in your browser or tweaking the view percentage from the application? Worry not for now Leopard’s zooming feature, you can easily see everything twice even three-times the original size. First you need to open up System Preferences, then select Keyboard & Mouse. Click on the Mouse tab and then choose the following according to your option (Control, Option, or Command).
   
   Then don’t forget to click on Keyboard Shortcuts, make sure you un-check the following option
   
   Otherwise, your zoom-scroll will not work. Have fun ^_^
2. Fast access by Spotlight
   Find just anything here. Either files, applications, fonts, bookmarks, you don’t need to comb folder by folder. You can even enter 2 * 2 and the Spotlight will show you the result ^_^
    

   
    

3. Easily locate your files
   So now you’re opening an e-book after downloading it. You’re not so sure where to find the saved to folder. Just right-click or command-click the file name at the header and voila! Fun and easy!!
   
4. The power of Widgets
   Widget comes along with Dashboard. You can actually add anything to the Widgets, from world clock to daily diet program. You can download the Widgets from the official Apple website, or at Widgipedia.
    
5. Secret screen savers
   Bored with your screen saver collections? Not to worry, there are some ‘hidden’ screen saver hiding in your mac. Simply go to /Library/System/Composition, drag the files into *user folder*/Library/Screen Savers. Try it out ^_^

 

mac or not mac

Beberapa bulan yang lalu saya membuat sebuah keputusan besar. Yak, saya memutuskan untuk pindah OS (Operating System) dari PC (Windows) ke Macintosh (Mac).

Why Mac?

Selain dari sisi desain produk yang betul-betul sempurna (IMHO), Macintosh dengan Leopard OS X na yang terbaru betul-betul menawarkan kenyamanan dan kemudahan bahkan bagi seorang newbie. Berbagai program bundle yang sudah terpasang, mulai dari Garage Band (program mix musik, bisa buat track lagu sendiri), PhotoBooth (seperti foto-foto d photobox mall hihihi.. tapi dengan tambahan efek-efek lain yang biasa na harus d edit dulu d Photoshop), iPhoto (manajerial foto, bisa buat album slideshow dengan template-template keren plus music tanpa d butuhkan keahlian mixing)  d tujukan bagi user newbie. Belum lagi fitur Quick Look, yang memudahkan kita untuk melihat berbagai jenis file tanpa harus membuka program terkait.

Kenyamanan lain yang saya rasakan setelah pindah yaitu kecepatan komputer. Sistem instalasi program pada Macintosh tidak menggunakan registry seperti pada Windows, dan mungkin seperti yang sudah d alami oleh advanced user PC lain yang beberapa waktu sekali harus instalasi ulang atau bersih-bersih registry supaya sistem komputer berjalan lancar.

Yang jadi keraguan besar pada awal migrasi k Macintosh adalah, bagaimana dengan program-program Windows yang sudah biasa saya pakai?
Kalo untuk software standar seperti Microsoft Office dan keluarga na, gak usah kawatir karena ada versi Mac na. Kalo bosan pake MS Office, ada iWork ‘08 (trial version tersedia dalam bundle pack Leopard). Lebih sederhana dan sama (mungkin lebih) fungsi na dengan MS Office.

Gamer seperti saya gimana nasib na? Gak bisa lagi saya main game online atau PC lain na? No.. no, kita punya banyak pilihan. Mac dengan basis prosesor Intel bisa d sandingkan dengan Microsoft Windows. Susah buat dual-boot? Ada Boot Camp, software bawaan dari Leopard yang membuat instalasi dual boot jadi gampang banget. Ada juga software-software lain seperti VMWare Fusion dan Parallels Desktop. Kita bisa jalankan Mac OS dan Windows sekaligus dalam satu layar. Khawatir dengan performa? Sampai detik ini saya menjalankan dual OS dan mengerjakan desain grafis tanpa pernah hang atau eror. Padahal Mac saya hanya mengusung Intel Core2Duo 2GHz dengan memori 2GB saja ^_^. Kalo hanya untuk gaming, bisa coba install CrossOver Games.
